Alva seeks unauthorized information

Home school families in the Alva ISD 001 School District recently received a letter from Director of Special Services/Federal Services Jan Davis. An alert HSLDA member forwarded the letter to us for a response. In her letter, Ms. Davis stated:

The Alva ISD 001 is required by the state department of education to keep on file a list of those school aged children that reside in our district who are being home schooled. We are in need of the names and ages of any school aged children that are currently home schooling.

HSLDA contacted Ms. Davis and explained Oklahoma law regarding home education. We pointed out that there is no legal authority requiring families to tell the state department of education or the local school district that they are home schooling, or to give the names and ages of children whom they educate at home.

HSLDA strongly believes that families should not be forced to submit information when there is no legal authority to require the family to do so. Because home schoolers are not required to provide the requested information to either the school district or the department of education, HSLDA advised its members to disregard the letter.
