Home schoolers face harassment
Having one of the best home school statutes in the country does not keep some Michigan school districts from trying to intimidate home schoolers into meeting requirements not specifically mandated by law.
The Calhoun Intermediate School District wrote a Home School Legal Defense Association member family, demanding a description of their educational program—including daily subjects, daily schedule, and days of instruction scheduled for each child. Calhoun selected the family simply because "their home remains identified as operating a home school education program under exemption 3(f) of the Michigan Compulsory School Attendance Act."
However, under state law, home schooling families in Michigan operate on the honor system: they need only provide an organized educational program in nine subjects. There is no requirement to file anything with the local school district. HSLDA explained to Calhoun that our member did not need to comply with any of the district's additional "requirements," and the family has heard nothing further from the district.
