Family investigated for educational neglect
Home School Legal Defense Association recently assisted a member family in Carroll County being investigated by the Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The parents instruct their children at their family-owned business where the children also work part-time. A customer who had questioned the children about being on the premises during school hours contacted DCFS, prompting the investigation.
However, the family was in full compliance with Arkansas' home school law, which the social worker was able to verify through the local public school officials. After speaking with HSLDA attorney Dewitt Black and visiting the family's place of business, the social worker determined that there was no basis for the allegation of educational neglect.
