Bad bill defeated

Due largely to the lobbying efforts of the Oregon Christian Educators Association Network, a bill threatening the freedoms of home educators in Oregon has died in committee. Sponsored by Representative Vicki Walker (D-41st), House Bill 2174 would have:

  • prohibited parents whose children had attendance problems at public school from ever teaching them at home,

  • required parents to have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate,

  • required parents to submit a notarized instructional plan to school officials every year, and

  • required the education service district to issue identification cards to home school students.
