Reading Ability Prompts Investigation
The Nashville Division of Family and Children received a complaint that a home schooled boy was not reading at a level commensurate with his age. The DFC sent a letter to the boys parents, members of Home School Legal Defense Association, telling them that they must come to the office for an appointment. Failure to comply with these requests may result in legal action, the letter threatened, followed by a handwritten note, please bring your children with you.
After receiving advice from HSLDA, the parents met briefly with the social worker (without the children) and suggested that the social worker call their HSLDA attorney if she had any further questions.
The social worker did not call the HSLDA attorney, so the attorney called the social worker. Thankfully, the DFC did not try to micromanage this childs education and closed the case as unfounded. Scott A. Woodruff
