Street Address Not Required

A Fairfax County official has told Home School Legal Defense Association that the county intends to start insisting that home school families provide a street address, not merely a post office box for an address. The law, however, requires only an address, not a street address. If the county pushes this matter, HSLDA will represent members who choose to provide only a post office box address.

Hanover Makes Unlawful Demand

A Hanover County family applying for a religious exemption was recently asked to provide three letters in support of the family’s ability to provide a satisfactory education. HSLDA explained to the county that this request was unlawful, and the demand has now been dropped.

Essex Receipt Contained Errors

Essex County officials are drafting a “receipt” to be used when home school families submit information. HSLDA pointed out that the original draft contained significant legal errors. We hope future drafts eliminate the errors. Our thanks to Brenda Grimes of Homestead Academy for her involvement on this issue.

Notice of Intent Reminder

For Virginia families who file an annual notice of intent, beginning this year the notices are due August 15. Previously, the due date was August 31. — Scott A. Woodruff
