Districts Seek Federal Participation Info

Over the past several years, Montana school districts have sent home schoolers a form offering participation in federally funded programs available to nonpublic schools. Most Montana home schooling families choose to disregard the inquiry by not completing the form. However, Stevensville Public School District No. 2 recently told a Home School Legal Defense Association member family that completion of the form was mandatory. HSLDA’s advice to the family was that, while local school districts may be required to offer participation in certain federal programs, nonpublic schools are not required to respond by completing any particular form.

The vast majority of home schooling families would not be interested in any federal programs, because participation would invariably involve some measure of government control. HSLDA member families being pressured to complete these forms or to participate in federal programs should contact us for advice and assistance. — Dewitt T. Black
