One Issue Resolved, Another Created
The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) has removed from its website all references to requiring private school or home school families to “register.” In several Court Report newsletters, Home School Legal Defense Association has dealt with issues arising from the unlawful insistence of officials that home school families “register.” We hope that this change will reduce needless harrassment.
Although removal of the “registration” language helps create clarity, confusion is being created by new language on the website. The following now appears on several IDOE websites: “Through this document, Dr. Suellen Reed, Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction, requests that you, as the administrator of a home school, report your school’s enrollment to the IDOE.” Families do not become obliged to report enrollment simply by reading this language. Enrollment must be reported only if a specific request is made to a specific private school. — Scott A. Woodruff
