Compulsory Attendance Age Raised

On May 26, 2000, Governor John Rowland signed into law House Bill 5276, raising the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18 years of age unless the child has graduated from high school. A parent may consent to a 16 or 17 year old’s withdrawal from school by personally signing a withdrawal form at the school district office.

Students receiving home instruction in Connecticut are considered “elsewhere receiving equivalent instruction in the studies taught in the public schools.” Nevertheless, parents wishing to take advantage of the withdrawal option when their child reaches age 16 or 17 may complete the withdrawal form and avoid further compulsory attendance requirements.

Designated Public Act No. 00-157, the new law does not go into effect until July 1, 2001. — Dewitt T. Black
