“Consider Turning Yourself In”

Consider turning yourself in, so you won’t have to be arrested in front of your children.” This is what the local sheriff told a southwest Michigan home school mother after receiving a complaint that she was not educating their children. The family had withdrawn their daughter from public school for health reasons following the advice of two physicians.

Home School Legal Defense Association wrote the sheriff’s department and explained exactly how the family was in full compliance with Michigan law. We asked, “Do you intend to make them chose between following their doctor’s advice and going to jail?”

When the sheriff’s office later was preparing a report for the prosecutor, HSLDA was able to provide input to help avoid a prosecution. Several months have passed with no further communication from the sheriff or prosecutor, so it appears there will be no further law enforcement action.
