Commendable Commitment to Accuracy

In a society where covering up mistakes has almost become an art form, it is greatly encouraging when a high-profile error is corrected swiftly and completely.

The Post and Mail newspaper of Columbia City, Indiana, printed an article on March 14 stating that, “To home school in this county you must: Register with the Board of Education.” Regular readers of Home School Legal Defense Association’s Court Report will instantly recognize the error: Indiana home schoolers are not required to register with their local school district or any other government entity.

After reading the article, Bob Tenney, board member of Noble Whitley Area Home Educators, contacted HSLDA to help him develop a strategy for response. We suggested language for a correction, and Tenney worked with newspaper personnel on printing the correction.

As a result, the Post and Mail ran this correction on March 21:

In our Tuesday March 14 edition, it reported that ‘To home school in this county you must: Register with the Board of Education.’ This is not correct. Families who educate their children at home are not required to register with Whitley County Consolidated Schools.

We commend the Post and Mail for their commitment to accurate reporting. — Scott A. Woodruff
