Earlier this year, the Marriage Tax Penalty Relief Act of 2000 (H.R. 6) passed the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees. H.R. 6 proposes to incrementally eliminate the IRS’ unequal treatment of married vs. cohabiting couples. Unfortunately, opponents have blocked the bill and the bill supporters have failed three times to muster enough votes to invoke cloture (limit debate) and vote on the floor. Senate leadership is debating what step to take next. HSLDA supports the Marriage Tax Penalty Relief Act.
