Home Schools Retain Proper Standing

Since 1950, home schools in Illinois have been regarded as private schools in the eyes of the law. Home schools have avoided government regulation partly because of this. Any policy that threatens to treat home schools differently will tend to lead to regulation of home schools.

The Wheaton-Warrenville School District recently drafted a policy that included the phrase “home and private school students.” This implies that there is and ought to be a difference between private schools and home schools.

At the request of local home school leaders, Home School Legal Defense Association wrote the school district, outlining legal concerns with treating home-based private schools differently than others. We also requested that the wording of the policy, be changed. In response, the district redrafted its proposed policy, omitting any reference to home school students. — Scott A. Woodruff
