Employer Guide to Indiana’s Child Labor Laws, a publication of the Indiana Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, states that the local school corporation cannot issue an employment certificate for a home schooled child unless the parents submit “the home school registration number.” Possibly in reliance on this document, some districts have demanded this registration number before they will issue an employment certificate.

Indiana Code § 20-8.1-4 describes the procedure for obtaining a certificate of employment. There is no requirement to submit a registration number. Contact Home School Legal Defense Association if you are denied a certificate of employment because your home-based private school does not have a registration number. – Scott A. Woodruff
