Church-Related School Extension Programs
Several Home School Legal Defense Association member families with children enrolled in church-school extension programs have been confronted by public school officials seeking to have their high school students registered at the public school. State law requires parents conducting a home school associated with a church-related school to register their grade 9–12 students at the public school and those students to participate in state testing.
However, parents whose children are attending a church-related school through its extension or satellite program are not considered to be conducting a home school and do not have to comply with the public school registration requirements. The Tennessee State Department of Education expressly recognized this option for complying with the compulsory attendance law in a February 18, 1999, memorandum distributed to all local public school superintendents.
Home School Legal Defense Association has assisted several member families whose decision to participate in a church-related school’s extension or satellite program has been challenged by public school officials.
