Statewide Assessment of Public School Students
A Home School Legal Defense Association member family in the Teton School District received a letter inviting their students to participate in the state-wide assessment of student achievement. Our legal department advised the family that there was no legal requirement for them to participate in the assessment program, nor would HSLDA necessarily encourage them to do so since it is not clear how this information might be used or what impact it might have on the home school family.
Similar letters are often received by home schoolers around the country inviting them to participate in state testing and proficiency testing. Fortunately, in this instance, the letter clearly indicated that this was not something that the home school family was obligated to participate in, but that the school district was making it available to them. However, in many other cases, home schoolers have received letters indicating that they are expected to contact the school district to schedule such testing, even though it is not required by state law.
If you have any questions regarding something that is being asked of you—or, in this case, offered to you—by your school district, please contact HSLDA. We especially encourage new home schoolers who may not yet know the ins-and-outs of the state law, when in doubt, to call our office. We are here to protect your right to home educate your children with as little interference from the government as possible.
