Senate Kills Compulsory Ed Increase
Some lawmakers believe that the solution to high drop-out rates is to compel children to attend school until they are older. Unfortunately, raising the compulsory attendance age negatively affects home schooling families by (1) infringing upon the right of parents to direct the education of their children—parents know best when their children are ready for school, work, or other training—and (2) burdening home school parents and students with additional years of compliance with state regulations.
A bill introduced in the Colorado Senate would have raised the upper limit for compulsory school attendance from 16 to 17 years of age. After hearing testimony concerning the bill, the senate education committee concluded that raising the compulsory attendance age would not lower Colorado’s drop-out rate. The committee killed the bill by a vote of 4 to 2.
Home School Legal Defense Association will continue to monitor Colorado legislation affecting home schools until the end of the legislative session in May.
