Lynn’s Intrusive Policy Reconsidered
On November 5, home schoolers met at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to hear Home School Legal Defense Association president Michael Farris argue the case of Brunelle v. City of Lynn Public Schools. The judges seemed quite receptive to HSLDA’s argument that utterly subjective “home visits” violated the rights of home school parents. While it may take the court months to come to a decision, the school committee has already begun back-pedaling to some degree.
The school committee met with home schoolers on Monday, November 23, to begin discussions about changing its policy. Lynn Mayor Patrick McManus is on record as opposing the home visit policy. James Mazareas, the superintendent, surprised the home schoolers by announcing that he is not in favor of home visits. Most of the other school committee members still seem committed to their unconstitutional policy, but their resolve finally seems to be weakening.
HSLDA encourages home schoolers to unite in strong local support groups and maintain communications with their school committees. The First Amendment guarantees the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Please pray for the Lynn home schoolers as they exercise that right!
