District of Columbia
Harassment Continues
The good news is that the District of Columbia has not changed its policy toward home schoolers. The bad news is that another September has brought illegal demands, unlawful harassment, and empty threats. DC has had no home school regulations since 1991, but for the seventh year in a row, the District has tried to force home schoolers to fill out a multi-page form that subjects home school programs to “approval” by public school officials. Every year, Home School Legal Defense Association advises families to provide only that information required by law (name, address, sex, and date of birth of each minor who enrolls or withdraws from his or her school), and to refer any further questions to us. After seven years, the school officials have learned that families who direct them to HSLDA understand the law and will not submit to the District’s illegal demands. We encourage all DC member families to remind their home schooling neighbors that home education is not regulated in the District, and that families who understand this are usually left alone by public school officials.
