Alert Homeschoolers See Results
This past April, Home School Legal Defense Association sent an alert to all of its Minnesota members regarding a very dangerous bill, House File 1932, which would have extended public school graduation testing requirements to private and homeschools. This bill would have placed homeschooled children under the authority of the state board's "results-oriented graduation rule" for Minnesota public school students.
HSLDA is happy to report that H.F. 1932 died in committee and is no longer a threat to nonpublic or homeschools for this year. No doubt the grassroots letter writing and phone call efforts of the home school community played a tremendous part in defeating this legislation.
Education Tax Credit
Minnesota Governor Arne H. Carlson is still seeking an education tax credit for families. The legislature refused to include this measure in the K-12 education finance bill. In response, the governor vetoed the finance bill. He says he will withdraw his veto only when the legislature approves the education tax credit provision.
Notification Form
Also in the works is a new notification form. Representatives of Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators have informed us that they are working with the governor's office in the hopes that a new notification form will be devised and in place for the upcoming school year. Their goal is to create a uniform notification process across the state that would be acceptable to both the home school community and superintendents.
