Curfew Proposed for Council Bluffs

The city of Council Bluffs and county of Pottawattamie are considering a juvenile curfew. This daytime curfew would predictably have the same effect that daytime curfews have had in other states. In California, HSLDA has filed a federal civil rights suit against the city of Monrovia, where one homeschooled child has been picked up by the police at least 14 times. HSLDA opposes juvenile daytime curfews because they try to deal with real truancy by simply making it a crime to be a child in a public place.

After concerned citizens, including homeschoolers, made their objections known, Pottawattamie County appears to have backed off a bit. But Council Bluffs seems to be moving towards enacting a juvenile curfew.

Daytime curfews are superficially appealing to citizens concerned about the rising crime rates. It takes some work to explain that law-abiding youth should not lose their liberties just because other youth are budding criminals. We have to make sure bad kids don't rob good kids of their liberties.

HSLDA prepared posters which proved quite effective when homeschoolers fought a curfew in Front Royal, Virginia.
