TEXAS

More Regulations Proposed

Texas House Bill 316 would have required home schoolers to provide their birth certificates to the Texas Education Agency. An outburst of opposition forced the bill into a study committee, but Representative Senfronia Thompson still seems committed to get it through the legislature in some form. We urge our members to continue to oppose legislation requiring birth certificates from home schoolers.

In a surprise move, the Public Safety Committee and the Texas House voted in favor of H.B. 1255 which would repeal parent-taught driver education. Texas home schoolers are well aware of the surprisingly difficult battle to establish parent-taught driver education in Texas. Our legislative victory two years ago has been opposed at every step by commercial driver schools, who view home schooling parents as a serious threat to their business. Senate Bill 284 is the Senate version of this effort to repeal parent-taught driver education. We urge all home schoolers to contact their senator, representative, and Governor George Bush, Jr. to state their position on these bills.
