Statewide Daytime Curfew Defeated

The Maryland House of Delegates introduced a daytime curfew bill (House Bill 486), which essentially would have made it a crime to be a child in a public place during school hours. Although home schoolers were exempted in the bill's language, experience shows that such curfews indirectly cause problems for home educated students.

Thanks to the efforts of the Maryland Association of Christian Home Educators, Christian Home Educators Network, American Civil Liberties Union, and Maryland's home educating families, the bill is dead at this point. Similar curfew legislation in California has resulted in at least one home school student being picked up by police 12 times.
