Protecting Private School Status

Senate Bill 615 would have permitted children who are "educated at home by a parent or guardian in an environment commonly known and referred to as a home school" to receive textbooks from the public schools. Home schoolers in Illinois and other "private school" states have fought for years to make sure that home schoolers are not separated from other private schools. This bill would create a very unfortunate distinction between home schools and other private schools. It is not at all clear that a great number of home schoolers are in need of public schools' textbooks. S.B. 615 has been held in committee, and does not seem to be an immediate threat at this time.
