On November 9, 1996, Eagle Forum honored home schooling mother Vickie Farris as its Full-Time Homemaker of the Year. Eagle Forum, a conservative organization, gives this annual award to a woman who has shown extraordinary dedication to her family by choosing to be a full-time wife and mother.
Former recipients of this award include Mrs. Lee Atwater, Mrs. Oliver North, Mrs. Antonin Scalia, and Mrs. Janet Lynn. Mrs. Farris, wife of HSLDA president Michael Farris, joins their ranks with nine children and fourteen years of home schooling to recommend her.
Eagle Forum president Phyllis Schlafly presented Vickie Farris with the award in Arlington, Virginia, at Eagle Forum's 25th anniversary convention. Mrs. Farris graciously accepted the award. She thanked her mother, Evelyn Freed of Walnut Creek, California, who had flown in as a surprise to attend the award ceremony. She also thanked the other members of her family present-husband Mike and daughters Jayme and Katie. She gave final thanks and praise to God for his enabling power to perform the daily tasks of a homemaker.
Vickie Farris considers this a recognition of all home schooling mothers, who daily give of themselves for their husbands and children. In a world that so often praises women who sacrifice family for career and power, these women stand apart.
