Home Schooling Worries Racine School District

The Racine Unified School District Board of Education is "concerned" about students who are home schooled. On June 14, 1996, they sent out an anonymous survey to all families in the district who were registered as home schoolers. They wrote, "The Racine Unified School District recognizes that parents select this option for a wide variety of reasons and would like to gain some insight from you anonymously."

The district asked for the students' grade levels and the reasons why the families selected home schooling. In addition, they asked the families to respond to this fascinating question. "We would consider returning to the public school system if certain conditions were available to our family. Those conditions would be …"

Home schooling is having an ever-increasing impact on the American education system. Some districts send out surveys, and others send out threatening letters. We encourage all home schooling families to work together to make sure that home education continues to be a dynamic and successful movement. While we encourage courteous and appropriate communications with government officials, HSLDA is not eager to see school districts attempt to "bribe" home schoolers back into the public education system.
