Driver's Education Bill Passes

Senate Bill 964 was amended to permit parents to teach driver's education to their own children. According to Major Ratliff of the Texas Traffic Law Enforcement Division, the Texas Department of Public Safety will soon write regulations to put this new law into effect. It will take until October or November to complete the regulation-writing process, but families can expect to be able to teach their own children to drive in the near future. To get more information about these new regulations, please contact Major James O. Ratliff, Texas Department of Public Safety, 5805 North Lamar Boulevard, P.O. Box 4087, Austin, TX, 78773.

The same bill also gives home schoolers a right to take driver's education at the public school on the same basis as any other child. This should end the long-standing practice of some other school districts, which have refused to permit home schoolers to enroll in the public school driver' ed program.
