WASHINGTON

Home School Options Expanded

On April 17, 1995, Washington Governor Mike Lowry signed into law Senate Bill 5479, which permits students receiving home-based instruction to be considered for transfer to a nonresident district. Under the new law, students in a home school, who are considered part time students under Washington law, are eligible to take courses and receive ancillary services offered by a public school in a district other than their district of residence. In order to finalize a home school student's eligibility for participation in a nonresident district, the nonresident district must approve the request for transfer. Existing law requires school districts to consider equally all applications from nonresident students.
