NORTH DAKOTA

Improvements to Home School Law Proposed

With the assistance of friendly legislators, the North Dakota Home School Association has proposed improvements to the existing home school law in North Dakota. Designated as House Bill 1488, the bill would make the following changes to existing law:

  • add a baccalaureate degree as a fourth option in meeting parental qualifications;
  • limit monitoring by a certified teacher to two years for parents who have a high school diploma or GED;
  • change standardized achievement testing from annually beginning at grade three to grades three, six, nine and 11 to coincide with public school testing; and
  • pro-rate the amount of monitoring time required for parents who do not conduct home-based instruction on a full-time basis.
