NEW HAMPSHIRE

Battling Bad Press

Many New Hampshire families were shocked to read a negative article on home schooling in theManchester Union Leader, one of the country's more conservative newspapers. According to a member of the Home School Advisory Council, not only were homeschoolers upset, but some of the public educators who were quoted in the article were angered, too. The journalist who wrote this piece spent a long time interviewing several public school representatives who had nothing but praise for homeschoolers, and then printed the one or two negative comments from the complete interview.

In order to generate reader interest, reporters must give their stories a "spin," either positive or negative. Many write stories which feature home education as a movement, but others make it a target. The Manchester Union Leader is an unfortunate example of the latter. (For examples of positive coverage, see the article here.) While public perception of home schooling is becoming increasingly positive, some people still misunderstand home education and will do all they can to inhibit it. Therefore, Home School Legal Defense Association encourages each New Hampshire homeschooler to join and actively help with your local support group and state home school organization. The price of home school liberty is still eternal vigilance!
