Have A Wonderful Thanksgiving

I love the fact that Dr. Ben Carson always speaks so highly of his mother's strength and influence in his life. I've heard him say that his mom often reminded her young boys that God gave them brains, so they needed to use them. That reminds me of...

...our eleven years of homeschooling, and how I often told my boys, "God gave you a voice, and He wants to hear it." So I related that to prayer, and how that  God wants all of us to praise Him, no matter what our age...

My Father's Wings

We swung the glass doors open, and stepped inside the bright entrance of the National Air and Space Museum / Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. As we walked down that main corridor, I remembered all the times we took field trips to this place, and thought about how much I missed the twins now that they were in college. How many times had we visited?  At least three, probably four.

Forget The Stereotypes

You might find this hard to believe, but I wasn't always for homeschooling. If someone would've told us that we would homeschool our kids one day, I probably would've laughed.

Teach your kids at home? It sounded so foreign to me. I remember once in our early days of marriage, Jay mentioned that it would be great to homeschool one day. I dismissed the thought and chuckled to myself...

Honoring Our Veterans

Especially today, it's important for us to acknowledge our appreciation for veterans. And as homeschoolers, we have the unique opportunity to cultivate that honor -- to hold our military in the highest esteem -- to teach our kids to truly appreciate those who've served in the military, and those who are currently serving, too...

It Takes Courage To Homeschool

Homeschooling isn't a baby any more. Having gained major traction in all fifty states, it's becoming more and more popular. Gone are the days when the trend-setters and trail-blazers (that's what I call those early homeschoolers) of the 80's were the lone people teaching their kids at (of all places!) home. They forged the way for us. Well, although homeschooling has become widely accepted by society, it still takes courage to teach at home.

The Musicality of Language

"To read with a loud and full tone, to pronounce every syllable properly and distinctly, and to mind the pauses;---are the three most difficult points to be gained in making good readers." -The Original McGuffey's Eclectic Fourth Reader

In the Pronunciation Project, I talked about encouraging our kids to use their voices masterfully whether they're speaking or reading. Today, I'd like us to look at language ---and, once again, to marvel at the instrument we carry around with us every day...

We Are Go For Launch

I thought back to that trip to Cape Canaveral, FL in our early days of marriage to see a space shuttle flight.  We woke up way too early---something like 4 a.m.----to catch a bus to the launch site. Because Jay's dad (see the blog, A Tribute) handled the audio-visual aspects of the launch, he arranged for us to be on the press pad with the media, families, and associates of NASA. Seven seconds to go....

Go For It!

"...WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE..." --Luke 1:37

You're looking at the pros and cons. You've been considering homeschooling for a long time, and have always wanted to try it. Well, if you're still wondering whether or not this is the year to start homeschooling, I highly encourage you to put your doubts behind, and go for it! After all --- there are only two things that can happen....

12 Ways To Build A Child's Imagination

Maybe you plan on homeschooling your four or five -year- old next year, and are already taking plenty of time to read, tell stories, and develop your child's budding intellect with hands-on play.  If so --- great!  And here are a few extra tips, or reminders to keep on doing what you're doing, and to encourage you all the more...

I Cannot Believe They Did This!

It's absolutely chilling and shocking that Germany took the Wunderlich children from their parents for the simple reason that they homeschool. Can you imagine sitting at your table to coordinate the day's academic lessons and agenda --- then to suddenly encounter 20 people at your door who proceed to forcibly take your children?
