On this Independence Day, 2013, there is a great deal to be thankful for--our families, our faith, our freedom, our friends to name a few. Much of what we enjoy in America, however, was procured for us by those who devoted their lives to laying a great foundation in our nation.
With determination, courage, great conviction, and a humble reliance upon God they made it possible, for generations of Americans to come, to enjoy these gifts and faith and family we all too often have taken for granted, and which now appear to be eroding rapidly before our very eyes.
I am troubled for the future of our dear America, as we are a nation which has forgotten God. As Abraham Lincoln expressed so well in his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863, (100 years before I was born)--
“We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.” – Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation
May we, who hold His name dear, be a people who pray--who repent, ask God for mercy, thank Him for His many blessings, look to Him for His help for our future and give Him the worth and worship He is due!
We have much to be thankful for, yes, to our founding fathers, and to our generous, merciful God who made all this possible.
HAPPY, HAPPY 4th of JULY!!!
