Electives to Spice Up Your Teen's High School Program

Diane Kummer

As this school year winds down, many of you are gearing up for the next school year! In the midst of your planning, take time to think about elective courses your teen may enjoy. There is a myriad of elective choices that can pique your teens’ interest, teach them new skills, and increase their motivation. We’ve gathered resources to help you as you explore the possibilities!

Elective courses usually fall outside of the core subject areas (english, math, science, history, and foreign language). Use these links to discover:

1. The difference between electives and extracurricular activities

2. A list of possible elective courses (including a photography elective)

3. Curriculum suggestions, if you need them

From a career development elective to a time management, worldviews, or industrial arts course—just to name a few!—your teen will appreciate the opportunities these courses provide to increase his or her learning.

Encourage your teen to come up with his own suggestions for elective courses he would like to tackle, and then work with him or her to design an elective course in that area.
