As part of a series on the birth of Christ, our Pastor preached a sermon entitled The Announcement to Mary. He pointed out how the world wants to erase the virgin birth, and wants to reduce Christmas to a shopping season. But the fact that Mary was a young woman of purity, a virgin, is a core doctrine of our Christian faith.
My Pastor especially encouraged the young people not to give into the morals of the world and emphasized that all of us are called to be lights in the midst of darkness, and can still live godly lives in a wicked world.
Most of all, he talked at length about Mary's response and attitude when Gabriel made the announcement to her, and highlighted how she responded in belief, saying, "...May it be to me according to your word." Luke 1:38.
Mary's response was a pure and simple submission to His will. A seemingly plain and ordinary young woman was taking part in God's plan in bearing Jesus Christ, the Son of God!
So, as we start to celebrate Christ's birth (Immanuel - God with us) and teach our children about the most magnificent event ever, let's remember Mary's humility in accepting God's will.
May we, too, find the grace and courage to do whatever God asks of us.
Talk to you soon. Enjoy the day, and enjoy your family.
