7 Favorite Field Trips

MaryAnn Gaver

One of the great things about homeschooling is the ability and opportunity to experience interesting field trips. An exciting excursion, an all-day outing, or family holiday -- no matter what you call it, you're sure to create some lasting memories when you venture out for a day of discovery and fun.

I absolutely loved coordinating field trips, and orchestrating a variety of unique learning experiences through day-time or over-night traveling.  Whether it was the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, or an afternoon at the Washington Zoo with a small group of homeschooling friends, I thoroughly enjoyed all the planning, packing, and hands-on learning that field trips provided.

Here are seven of my favorite places to go:

  • Assateague Island, Maryland
  • Annapolis, Maryland
  • Valley Forge, Pennsylvania  (Please see the blog, Autumn Arrives)
  • Monticello - Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Williamsburg, Virginia
  • George Washington's  Mount Vernon / Washington, D.C.
  • Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

Whether we watch clipper ships sail in the Chesapeake Bay, eat crabs at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, tour the Smithsonian, or look up once again (555 feet) to our nation's Washington Monument -- I'm still enthralled by Maryland.  Her proximity to D.C., her beautiful harbors, lakes, mountains and coastal areas -- I love our Old Line state!

I remember the time I announced that we were going to Mount Vernon for the day.  "No music practice this morning, and no books all day!" I told the twins at breakfast.  "After you brush your teeth, we're heading out."

...The scenic and winding drive down the George Washington Parkway was a splendid one.  Once we arrived, we toured the mansion with its quaint parlors and ornate dining rooms. We sat to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Potomac before meandering through the gardens, stables, and outbuildings of George Washington's beloved home. A memorable and fun field trip.

George Washington wrote, "No estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this..."

Whatever you do, wherever you go -- enjoy the memories you'll make as you travel!
