Senate File 2316: Termination of Parental Rights for Failure to Provide Education
Sponsors:
Judiciary Committee
Summary:

This bill allows a parent’s parental rights to be terminated for repeatedly failing to provide education “necessary for the child’s physical, mental or emotional health and development." With the new homeschool law, there are many more opportunities for disagreements as to exactly how to comply. Any one of these could rapidly result in a parent being threatened with termination of their parental rights if this bill passes. That's a bizarre penalty for truancy, and unnecessary. Judges could enter appropriate orders that come far short of terminating the parental rights.

HSLDA's Position:
Oppose.
