The purpose of Senate Bill 127 is to create a property tax credit for homeschool parents. HSLDA supports tax credits for homeschoolers. The specific language of this bill, however, does not clearly benefit homeschoolers and has the potential to create unintended consequences that could harm families.
Although HSLDA supports tax credits for homeschoolers, the bill's language would require homeschoolers to submit qualifications to prove they are competent to teach—something that the current homeschool regulation doesn't require. HSLDA is working with CHEO and the sponsor of the legislation to ensure that the interests of homeschoolers are protected. The bill's sponsor, Senator Kris Jordan, has committed to addressing concerns raised by HSLDA and CHEO.
