Legislative Bill 593 would create charter schools in Nebraska.
This bill is being closely monitored. It is vital that the distinction between exempt homeschools and charter schools is preserved.
01/23/2013 Introduced.
01/24/2013 Referred to Education Committee.
02/11/2013 Notice of hearing for February 25, 2013.
03/14/2013 Indefinitely postponed; Bill died.
While public school charter schools provide parents with another choice, we emphasize that they are still public schools in every sense of the word. HSLDA also strongly cautions homeschoolers against enrolling in virtual charter schools. Virtual charter schools are actually controlled by the public school system. Families who choose to participate in charter schools are participating in public schools, and are subject to increased government regulation over the inner workings of their homes, including course content and curriculum choices.
More information about the differences between homeschools and charter schools can be found in HSLDA's Issues Library.
