| Homeschool Heroes by Christopher J. Klicka
For 24 years HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka battled for homeschool freedoms in all 50 states on behalf of thousands of homeschoolers. In his book, Home School Heroes: The Struggle and Triumph of Home Schooling inAmerica, he tells the stories of over a hundred homeschool families from the 80s and early 90s and how they overcame intense opposition.
He gives God all the glory for answering the prayers of His people and delivering them from very intense and difficult battles in the courts, the legislatures, and in their own homes.
Chris Klicka tells about the draconian laws that required parents to be certified teachers, submit to home visits by government officials, have their curriculum approved by public school administrators, and other unacceptable restrictions—and how homeschool families overcame!
Chris explains, "One of the purposes this book is to tell the stories of the faithful men and women who were called by God to homeschool, and the great sacrifices that were made by these pioneers. I want to ensure that the new generation of homeschoolers, the people throughout the United States, and even the world, appreciate and not forget the sacrifice. My hope is that all those who read this book will feel compelled to remain ‘eternally vigilant’ in being active to protect our hard-fought freedoms to homeschool in the United States."
What others are saying about Home School Heroes:
"Within just a few years, in the early 1980s, thousands of courageous parents quietly decided to keep their children out of conventional schools in order to teach them at home. Only God can know all of their stories. But fortunately, though it was very painful at the time, many such parents were discovered by state authorities, hauled into court, (some were even jailed), and in those legal conflicts, state laws were changed. Freedom for the many was won by the few. In many of those cases, Chris Klicka was there. In his new book, Home School Heroes, Chris tells their stories. In doing so, he captures a precious piece of history for all who love freedom and long to preserve it. Read it, and then dream of following in the footsteps of these brave families, and those who defended them."
—Gregg Harris, homeschool pioneer, speaker, and author of The Christian Home School
"Home School Heroes is an informative and inspiring account of the history and social impact of the homeschool movement in the United States. It is an important book because it remembers and honors the pioneers whose sacrificial work made possible the freedom homeschool parents enjoy today. I highly recommend it to all who love home education and seek to make it even stronger for future generations."
—Justice Tom Parker, Alabama Supreme Court
"This book proves that individuals can make a difference and, in the process, change the course of history."
—John W. Whitehead, President of The Rutherford Institute
"Chris Klicka has written an important book on one of the most encouraging movements of our time—home schooling—and gives God all the glory. He shatters the myth that there is anything illegal about it. I am impressed that Chris, though suffering with MS, still engages in evangelism on a regular basis."
—D. James Kennedy, President of Evangelism Explosion, President of Coral Ridge Ministries
"Chris Klicka chronicles the history of the modern-day homeschooling movement with the detail and impact that only an eyewitness can deliver. From the battles on the snowy plains of North Dakota, to the long road to the Michigan Supreme Court, Chris was there. Chris reminds us with the many examples from his own life and others that trusting in the mighty hand of God will bring deliverance for those who follow His ways, and that perseverance brings victory. Chris' book shows all of us how one man, sold out to God for a noble, ambitious purpose, can accomplish great things for God by His wisdom and power. May this book spur the next generation to even greater feats of glory."
—Jordan Lorence, Vice President and Senior Counsel of Alliance Defense Fund
"Home School Heroes is a book that is long overdue. This is a must read for every homeschooler as it details the struggles homeschoolers faced to gain their freedom to homeschool. No one is more qualified to bring this story than Chris Klicka. More than any other person, he has been on the front lines of this battle for 24 years. His summary of the homeschool law for the 50 states is the single most important resource that has been developed to advance homeschool freedom. Chris is a hero himself but because of his modesty, he has chosen to write about what others have done. This should be required reading for every home school history curriculum."
—Michael Smith, President of Home School Legal Defense Association
