Our Speakers
HSLDA’s @home e•vents program showcases speakers who are experts in their fields and often leaders in the homeschool community. They’ve been in your shoes and want to come alongside you in your journey to enhance your family’s homeschooling experience! Our speakers possess the breadth of experience, talent, and enthusiasm suited for encouraging you and equipping you with relevant tools.
Past e•vents have included presentations by well-known authors and speakers, such as Andrew Pudewa, Lou Priolo, Dr. Jay Wile, Jeff Myers, and Hal and Melanie Young, as well as experienced homeschooling parents and homeschool graduates. HSLDA staff speakers have included President J. Michael Smith, Chairman Michael P. Farris, many other attorneys, and some of our Special Needs, High School, and Early Years coordinators, such as Dianne Craft, Vicki Bentley, Becky Cooke, and Diane Kummer.
Sherri Seligson
Before being promoted to the position of “mother,” Sherri Seligson worked as a marine biologist at Walt Disney World’s Living Seas pavilion in EPCOT Center. Sherri was involved in collecting and maintaining coral reef animals, with a focus on fish nutrition and marine predator care. During this time she completed research on shark behavior, becoming the first Walt Disney World representative to have research published.
Sherri authored Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Marine Biology text and curriculum, and has written several articles for marine magazines such as Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Aquarium Magazine, as well as articles for various home school publications. She has a heart for teaching students the importance of studying God’s creation and equipping them to give an answer for their faith. Sherri also speaks at conventions where she loves to encourage other moms on their homeschooling journey.
Sherri and her husband David live in Orlando, Florida, where they have homeschooled their four children for fifteen years, and can take many “field trips” to the beach.
“I would have loved for my kids to have seen this. Loved the e-vent!”— Monica, SD

11/4/2009 (10PM EST): Marine Biology: Oceans of Evidence Against Evolution
Why do so many home schooling parents worry about teaching their students science? Perhaps the biggest fears come from seemingly vast quantities of evolution-based science coming from media outlets. Evolutionary science has permeated our culture—turning up in the newspaper, on television shows, and in movies.
Amidst all this evolutionary “evidence,” we rarely hear about the thousands of creatures whose existence and attributes contradict the theory of evolution. The ocean and its creatures especially challenge the hypothesized process of evolution.
Join Sherri, a marine biologist and homeschool mom, to learn how sharks’ abilities are “ahead of their time” (evolutionarily speaking), and dolphins’ organs defy evolutionary processes. Take a look at some “living fossils” which “should” be either extinct or look drastically different than they actually do, according to evolution. Discover how the ocean itself gives clues about the age of the earth, and indicates that the earth may be much younger than the suggested multi-billion years!
Homeschooling parents should not be afraid to teach science. If we truly believe what the Bible teaches, we can study the world boldly, expecting to be excited and amazed at its testimony to God’s glory!
