7/16/2009 (9PM EST): Classical Writing Primers-Preparing Young Students for Writing
Would you like to give your child a classical education in this modern world? Classical education expert and homeschooling mom Kathy Weitz introduces the writing methods of Charlotte Mason in this enlightening webinar.
A highly respected educator of the late 19th and early 20th century, Charlotte Mason encouraged short lessons, copywork, narration, nature study, and picture study in early childhood education. She also advocated reading aloud carefully chosen, well-written books, memorizing poetry, learning hymns and folksongs, and making sure there was ample time to play and dream each day. Her methods were similar to the ancient classical approach to preparing young children for their formal education.
Kathy will discuss the benefits of these methods and how they can be used to prepare today's young students for a more rigorous education in following years. Kathy is the author of the new Classical Writing Primer series of workbooks for early elementary students. These workbooks are designed to help home educators establish and maintain simple, consistent weekly language arts practice. Come prepared with specific questions for the Q&A time with Kathy which will follow this presentation.

11/17/2009 (9:45 PM EST): Teaching History Around the World
Whether you are homeschooling a teen or a pre-schooler—or both at the same time—your students can study and learn together. Sherrie Payne, mother and teacher of six, has learned to make multi-grade homeschooling both fun and efficient.
To simplify the multi-level teaching process and eliminate “boring” from history lessons, Sherrie wrote a world history curriculum entitled, "Around the World in 180 Days." In this engaging webinar, Sherrie draws from "Around the World" to share the excitement of history!
You’ll learn that there’s more to world history than just dates, names, and places. Sherrie will show how you can give your students “the rest of the story,” and help them understand more about the nations that influence world events.
Take a ride in an imaginary hot air balloon, and prepare to have fun with world history!

In this @home e-vent, Cathy Duffy will help us first identify our own and our children’s learning styles. Then she will discuss methods of teaching to our children’s strengths and overcoming weaknesses using examples from various math programs. Many children (and some adults) have trouble learning to spell, but the difficulty may not be with the student so much as the method of presentation. Leave this e-vent with a greater insight into the nature of spelling and neurological function and be well-equipped to meet the needs of all your children, not just the “naturally” good spellers.
