FAQs

Confused about any aspect of @home e-vents? You’re in the right place! This page is designed to help clarify the most common areas of confusion. Maybe it will answer one of your questions. Perhaps more than one! If not, we’d love to provide an answer that satisfies you, so please contact us at Athome@hslda.org or (540) 338-8284.

General

A. @home e-vents allows you to attend real-time, web-based seminars on topics pertinent to your homeschool. With a live video feed streaming to your computer, you’re able to watch and listen to speakers, view relevant PowerPoint slides, and participate in Q&A sessions. E-vents are offered throughout each week and require registration. Go to our About Us page for more information.

A. E-vent pricing varies depending on the speaker, length of seminar, number of seminars, and other factors. HSLDA is a nonprofit organization and tries to keep e-vent prices low in order to bless many homeschoolers. The cost of each e-vent is set to cover the speakers’ fees and the ever-present cost of technology to run the WebEx system. HSLDA members receive discounted pricing on each e-vent.

A. All e-vent listings on our website are in Eastern Time (ET).

A. Visit our Speakers page for information on our qualified presenters.

A. On average, the duration of an e-vent is one hour. An e-vent may run over an hour depending on the length of the Q&A session at the end of the e-vent.

A. Subscribe to our email list to receive information on upcoming e-vents. Emails that we send to our subscribers may include coupon codes for discounted prices on future e-vents.

A. At certain times, e-vents may be offered in packages. This means that you will be able to purchase a certain number, or set, of e-vents at a discounted price.

A. Yes! Nearly all of our e-vents are available to view at your convenience within a few business days following the live session. To watch a recorded session, simply click on the Library button. After locating and purchasing the e-vent, you will receive a link in your account under Purchase History that will enable you to view the recording as many times as you wish for a period of thirty (30) days.

A. Yes! When you register for a live e-vent, you automatically gain access to the recording of that e-vent for a period of 30 days. The recording will be available within two to three business days following the live e-vent. To access the recording, log in and click on Purchase History.

A. No. The notes from the PowerPoint are only made available on special occasions. Instead, we suggest that you take notes while the speaker is presenting. If you need to expand your notes further, once the e-vent recording is posted online you’ll be able to review, pause, and restart the e-vent as often as you like.

A. No. All e-vents are nonrefundable.

A. Currently we do not offer CDs of our e-vents; however, all of our events are recorded and available to view online at your convenience within two to three business days following the live session. Please visit our Library section to view past e-vents.

Registration

A. To register for an e-vent, click on the button marked Add to Cart under an e-vent description. You will then see a pop-up window that says, “Event has been added to your cart.” You must close out the pop-up window and click on Shopping Cart to finish your registration and pay for the e-vent. If you have not yet logged in, you will be asked to provide your username and password.

Once you have registered and paid for the e-vent, you will receive an email with the e-vent login information (the Registration ID and E-vent Password) and a link to join the e-vent. The link to join the e-vent will also be in your Purchase History under your account. Once you select Click Here to Attend you will be directed to a page where you can input your Registration ID and E-vent Password. (Please note that you will still need the Registration ID and E-vent Password sent to you in your registration email to participate in the e-vent.) Just follow the link and instructions at the correct time listed in the email and you will be logged into the e-vent.

A. No. You must create a separate username and password for @home events. Click here to create yours now.

A. Registration for most e-vents will be open about a week before the live e-vent. Subscribe to our e-vent email list to receive notification or check our website for registration in the days leading up to the e-vent.

A. If you do not receive login information for an e-vent that you registered for, first check all of your mail folders. Sometimes the email gets caught in a spam or junk filter if your system does not recognize the sender. Look for an email from messenger@webex.com and with a title that begins with “Registration approved for the @home e-vent.” Be sure to place this address on your approved senders list for future e-vents.

If you do not see login information or a confirmation email in any folders and you have already added messenger@webex.com to your approved senders list, there are a couple steps you can follow to have your confirmation email resent to you. First, log in to your @home e-vent account and double check that your email address is entered correctly. If it was already correct, click on Purchase History and follow the link to the e-vent. At the bottom of the Join box, you will see an option to have your confirmation email containing your Registration ID and E-vent Password resent to you. We highly recommend that you register and then check for confirmation at least one business day before the e-vent so that we can work out any glitches before the scheduled e-vent time.

A. Did you copy and paste your Registration ID and E-vent password into the textboxes? If so, this is the cause of your problem. The information must be typed or else the program will not recognize it. Please note that the ID and password are case-sensitive.

Live e-vents

A. Internet Explorer (IE) is the most reliable browser for these e-vents. Mozilla and Firefox are also compatible with WebEx, but not recommended. If you use a Mac, we suggest that you use Firefox instead of Safari.

A. Yes. The systems that you are asked to run or install are safe and will enable you to view the e-vent.

A. Make sure you are on a WebEx-compatible browser such as Internet Explorer (recommended), Mozilla, or Firefox. You may have to load a few items for the e-vent to successfully play on your computer.

Since you have reached the plain white page that says “Event in progress, Do not close this window, Refresh this web page, etc...” you have successfully made it as far as setting up the e-vent on your computer. If the event had trouble or fails to load, chances are this is related to your internet speed. Sometimes, even with a high-speed internet connection, buffering lags occur. The platform we use to host e-vents requires a large amount of bandwidth.

If you are using a wireless internet connection, try plugging directly into the internet router using a cord. You may also try using another browser.

If you are unable to connect with the e-vent, you can wait and view the recording of the e-vent. All of our e-vents are available to view at your convenience within two to three business days following the live session. To view a recorded session, wait two to three business days after the live e-vent, log into your account, click on the Purchase History tab, and select your e-vent recording. You will have access to the recording for 30 days.

A. Check your internet connection speed. See requirements under our technological requirements page.

A. Double-check with the host to see if the e-vent has started. If so, click on the Communicate tab at the top of your screen and select Join or Rejoin Audio Broadcast. Unfortunately, audio issues are generally due to internet speed, but rejoining the broadcast should fix your problem.

A: To ask the speaker questions during a live e-vent, type your question into the box labeled Q&A on the right-hand side of your screen and click Send or press the Enter key. The speaker may address your question immediately or may wait until the end of the session to take all questions. (You can enter your questions at any time. Just realize that the speaker may not respond immediately.)

If you experience technology issues, you will want to contact the e-vent host. Type your question into the Chat box on the right-hand side of your screen, and then click Send or press the Enter key. The host will see your question and address it as soon as possible.

Recordings

A. To watch a recorded session, simply click on the Library button. After locating and purchasing an e-vent, log in to your account, click on the Purchase History tab, select your e-vent recording, and sit back and watch! You may pause, rewind, fast-forward, or replay any recording.

A. Yes, with one exception. To register for a recording, go to the Library section of the website and click on the button marked Add To Cart under an e-vent description. You will then see a pop-up window that says “Event has been added.” You must close out the pop-up window and click on Shopping Cart to finish your registration and pay for the e-vent. If you have not yet logged in, you will be asked to provide your user name and password. There is one difference between accessing a live e-vent and a recording: you do not need a Registration ID or E-vent Password to access a recording. Simply log in to your account, click on the Purchase History tab, select your e-vent recording, and sit back and watch!

A. Recordings are usually available within two to three business days after a live e-vent.

A. Yes. You may pause, rewind, fast-forward, or replay any recording.

A. No. Once you register and pay for a recording, you may view it as many times as you wish for a period of 30 days after registration.

Technical Information

A. If you use a Macintosh computer, all features should work normally with one exception. Unfortunately, video feeds are not supported by Macs. You may attend a live e-vent but will not be able to see any live video incorporated into the presentation. However, all Mac users will be able to view the video on all recordings. See our full technology requirements for more information.

A. Yes! While a slow internet connection could create difficulty viewing a live e-vent, we have found that the recording of an e-vent will work well with a slower speed. You can allow the e-vent to load before you play it, just as you would with a YouTube video. All of our e-vents are recorded and available to view at your convenience within two to three business days following the live sessions. When you register for a live e-vent, you automatically gain access to the recording of that e-vent for a period of 30 days.

A. We suggest two things: First, you can watch a live, online demo of WebEx (the platform used for all e-vents). Please note: This is a demonstration of the WebEx software, not a demonstration of a live @home e-vent. The demo is entirely run by WebEx and does not represent the goals, objectives, or beliefs of HSLDA in any way.

Second, once you register for a live e-vent, you will receive an email with the e-vent Registration ID and E-vent Password, as well as a link to join the e-vent. Click on the link included in the email and it will bring you to a page titled Event Information. Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and you will see the following: “Before you join the event, please click here to make sure that you have the appropriate players to view UCF (Universal Communications Format) rich media files in the event.” Make sure you follow these directions. Also, we suggest that you read over our list of technological requirements before you register to determine compatibility.

A. Each e-vent includes a live audio and video feed to virtually bring you into the same room as the speaker. On top of that, the Q&A session at the end of each presentation allows you to interact with the speaker in a real-time environment! Since our e-vents are technology-based, your computer must meet basic system requirements to allow you to benefit from each e-vent.

System Requirements
If your computer meets the requirements below, then you’re good to go!

  • Windows:
    • Operating Systems:
      • 98, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, and Windows 7
    • Minimum System Requirements:
      • Processor: Intel or AMD
      • JavaScript: JavaScript and cookies enabled
      • Other: Active X enabled (unblocked for Internet Explorer is recommended)
      • Memory: At least 512 MB RAM (at least 2 GB RAM for Vista)
    • Browsers: (we recommend using Internet Explorer)
      • Internet Explorer: 6.0 SP1, 7.0
      • Firefox: 2.0
      • Mozilla: 1.7
      • Netscape: 8.1 (XP/2000)
    • Hardware: Speakers or headphones
  • Macintosh:
    • Please note: Unfortunately, video feeds are not supported by Macintosh computers during live e-vents. You may attend a meeting, but will not see any live video incorporated into the presentation. You will be able to see the video, while using a Mac, when watching the recording of an e-vent.
    • Operating Systems:
      • 10.5, 10.6
    • Minimum System Requirements
      • Processor: PowerPC or Intel
      • JavaScript: JavaScript or cookies enabled
      • Other: Apple JRE 5.0
      • Memory: At least 512 MB RAM
    • Browsers: (we recommend using Firefox)
      • Firefox: 2.0
      • Safari: 3.0 (OS X 10.5), 5.1 (OS X 10.6)
    • Hardware: Speakers or headphones
  • Internet Connection:
    • The minimum internet connection speed recommended is a 56K modem, however performance will improve the faster/better your connection. Performance-enhancing recommendations include: DSL (300Kb or higher), cable modem, FiberOptic, etc.

A. It appears that WebEx is not compatible with newer browsers (such as Firefox 4), so this is a brand-new problem. The first possible solution is to use an older version of the browser(Firefox 3 or Safari 3.0). Here are links to access these older versions:

Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Safari: http://support.apple.com/downloads/#internet

The second solution requires a few steps, but we have found that it works. Open Finder, and click on “Applications.” Then find the browser you are using (Firefox or Safari) and Control–click the file (i.e., hold down the Control button on your keyboard and click the file). A drop down menu should appear, and you should then click “Get Info.” When the box pops up, click the General drop down tab, and check the option “Run in 32 bit mode.”
