House Bill 1250: Homeschooler Eligibility for TEXAS Grant Scholarship

Summary:
This bill originally was written to amend the current law and allow low income private school students (this will include private school students at home) to receive the Texas Grant Scholarship and the B-On-Time Loans.

This bill passed the House and the Senate Education Committee; during the Senate vote on the floor, Senator Ellis forced an amendment to strike section one from the bill. HB 1250 then passed.

The first section in HB 1250 related to TEXAS grants. This section would have allowed graduates from all private schools (and not just from accredited private schools) to meet the academic eligibility for TEXAS grants. Because this section is no longer part of the bill, the requirements for the TEXAS grants (including graduating from an accredited high school) remain the same.

However, the second section, relating to B-on-time loans, did remain part of HB 1250 and passed the Senate. With the new language graduates from all private schools, including unaccredited private schools in the home, meet the academic criteria for the B-on-time loans.

Representative Howard agreed to the Amendment, and the bill was sent to the governor for a signature.
