Senate Bill 131: Adding State Assessments for Homeschoolers
At the request of Department of Education and State Board of Education
This bill would add state assessments given to public school students to the homeschool law. It appears that these state assessments would not be mandatory but could be taken by homeschool students if selected by the parent. In our opinion, these tests shouldn't even be an option because they are based on the public school curriculum and are designed to measure achievement on state content standards.
This bill was introduced on January 14, 2003. The bill is now before the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee. On February 13, 2003, a public hearing was held on Senate Bill 131.
This bill should be opposed.
