Senate Bill 1487: Would Allow All Districts to Raise the Compulsory Attendance Age

Summary:
Currently each city in New York and each union free school district with more than 4,500 inhabitants may increase the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 17. This bill would have permitted all school districts in New York to do so.

Status:
This bill was introduced on February 4, 2003, and was sent to the Senate Education Committee.
While the first year of the 2003-2004 session of the New York legislature ended June 20, 2003, this bill could be re-introduced in January of 2004.

HSLDA's Position:
This bill was opposed.
