Assembly Bill 311: Authorizes Homeschoolers to Participate in Public School Activities

Sponsor:
Ronald (Ron) L. Knecht (R), District No. 40.

Summary:
Assembly Bill 311 (formerly Bill Draft Request 966) would have authorized homeschooled children to participate in athletic and scholastic programs of the school district.

Status:
12/16/2002 Prefiled.
03/13/2003 Introduced.
03/13/2003 To Assembly Committee on Education.
04/07/2003 Discussed in Assembly Education Committee.
04/09/2003 Amended in Assembly Education Committee. Do pass amended.
04/21/2003 Notice of exemption. Re-referred to Committee on Ways and Means.
06/03/2003 The 72nd Regular Session adjourned Sine Die. AB 311 is now dead.

Action Requested:
None.

HSLDA's Position:
Neutral. HSLDA does not take a position on bills providing public benefits to homeschool families. This bill has been reviewed to insure that it does not harm homeschoolers directly. On April 9, 2003, the bill was substantially amended by the Assembly Education Committee. Representatives from Washoe County gutted many important sections of the bill. HSLDA is disappointed by the influence a single county has on homeschoolers opportunities across the state.
