Legislative Bill 534: Universal Access to Public Schools

Summary:
Legislative Bill 534 would permit homeschoolers and other non-accredited private school students to participate in sports, classes, and other activities at the public schools.

Status:
LB 534 was introduced to Nebraska's unicameral (one-house) legislature on January 21, 2003, and referred to the Education Committee on January 23. It was heard in committee on February 10, 2003, but no official action has yet been taken by the committee. On May 29, 2003 it was "indefinitely postponed." The 98th Legislature, First Session adjourned sine die on Friday, May 30, so LB 534 is dead.

HSLDA's Position:
Neutral. HSLDA takes a neutral position on whether homeschoolers should participate in public school classes and activities. This bill implements the Nebraska Constitution's provision of free instruction to "all persons between the ages of five and twenty-one years."
