House Bill 220: Procedural Changes to Homeschool Law

Author:
Rep. Michael Lott (District 104)

Summary:
This bill would have changed the time for filing a certificate of enrollment in a home instruction program from September 15 to "before the beginning of the eleventh school day of each year." It also would have revised the procedure for notifying the parent of noncompliance. We think this bill would have reduced the flexibility parents now have in deciding whether to home school and notifying the attendance officer. It would be tied to the beginning of the public school term, no matter how early school starts.

Status:
The bill died in the House Education Committee on February 4, 2003.

HSLDA's Position:
We opposed this bill.
