Senate Bill 1728: Further Regulations for Nonpublic Schools Claiming Tax Deduction

Sponsors:
Skoglund, Anderson, and Kelley.

Summary:
This bill would subject all nonpublic schools, including homeschools, that take advantage of Minnesota's tax deduction for educational expenses to the requirements of the Pupil Fair Dismissal Act.

Status:

03/17/2005(S) Introduction and first reading; Referred to Education

Action Requested:
None at this time. The Minnesota legislature is now closed, and this bill did not pass.

HSLDA's Position:
Oppose. This bill appears to be a straightforward attack on private school freedom. To the best of our knowledge, there are no specific problems in current law that support the proposed changes. Whether or not your family currently takes advantage of these tax breaks, this bill is an affront to every Minnesota family that spends their own money to educate their own children. It must be defeated.
