Legislative Document 687: Equivalent Instruction Program Participation

Sponsor:
Heidrich

Summary:
Legislative Document 687 would allow homeschooled students to participate in interscholastic, co-curricular or extracurricular activities at a private school. In addition any student already enrolled in one private school may participate at another school if their own does not provide the activity. If a homeschooler plays on a private school's team, the team's and school's eligibility would be protected.

Status:
The Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs voted this bill down Aprili 2, 2003.

HSLDA's Position:
We support this bill.

Background:
Late last year, a number of homeschool families were denied participation on private school teams by the Maine Principal's Association. For further details, see our previous postings at http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/ME/default.asp.
